Some Fresh Water for Pupy

Most of the ponds and mud wallows at sanctuary are filled year-round with water from a plumbing system. This is to ensure that the elephants have something to play in and hydrate themselves with, even during the dry season. The water comes from two semi-artesian wells on the property, so it’s fresh and delicious. 

As we know, Pupy has been enjoying the manmade mud wallow, and producing some of her own, making sure to coat herself, which helps with sun protection and bug deterrence. The moisture is also good for her skin, soaking into her deep wrinkles and keeping her cool. Here, Pupy has found the pipe that refills the wallow and decides to take a few drinks of the fresh water that’s shooting out. You may remember Pocha discovering the same sort of pipe when she was working on coming out of her crate. It’s important to have clear, crisp water for the elephants, because they seem to delight in it, no matter how it’s used.

    What is the dark stripe down Pupy’s face?

      She’s drinking water, so it looks like she’s just gotten wet. However, there are times when an elephant secretes from its temporal glands and you can see that along the side of the face.

    Is Pupy’s trunk getting stronger now that she has the opportunity to use it in so many new ways?

      We’re noticing her using it in clever ways, picking things up more adeptly – but that doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with improved strength as it does increased dexterity.
