Pupy Reclines in the Mud Wallow

Last week, we showed a video of Pupy enjoying the mud wallow for the first time. It was a special moment, since so many of us were looking forward to watching when she finally stepped into the soft and squishy mud. Since then, she has spent more time there, but never fully coated herself.

You can see here that that’s changed. The researcher who has been recording Pupy’s behaviors from a distance caught sight of her rolling around and reclining in the wallow, making sure to get all the nooks and crannies as muddy as possible. The video isn’t that close, since she had to make sure to stay at a distance and not let her presence affect any of Pupy’s actions. We were lucky that she shared these observations with us so that we could celebrate this milestone. It was clearly becoming more and more fun as the rain poured down, making it even better for splashing than it was before.

OH….MY…. GOODNESS!!! It must feel like heaven to her. Does all the new and exciting and different stimulus overwhelm her?? I live in St Louis and we’re going to see the new baby elephant at the St Louis Zoo. His name is Jett and he is awesome. As a human being, I am in total awe of these majestic souls. I’m grateful to be on the same planet with them.

She seems to be very open to the new experiences, rather than being overwhelmed. She lived with Kuky for so many years and is probably just beginning to figure out who she is without her companion. It could end up being a very good thing for her to have time on her own to acclimate to her new home.
