Pupy Under the Stars

Nighttime view of female African habitat. Pupy, a female African elephant, stands under the stars.

We’ve mentioned that Pupy likes to make her way deeper into the habitat at night. It makes for a peaceful scene with the owls hooting and the natural world coming alive in a new way. As usual, the caregivers drove around looking for Pupy, but once again she was nowhere in sight.

They made some noises at the barn to try and tempt her to come eat her dinner, but she still didn’t appear, so they started to drive slowly around again–and she popped up at the back of Yard 1, ready for a late night snack. They captured this snapshot of Pupy under the stars, giving you a small glimpse of what it’s like to experience an elephant walking through the habitat in the evening.

Pupy looks like she’s in the wild. I hope she’s imagining herself on the African Savannah!

For a moment I had this thought, “wouldn’t it be fantastic if the sanctuary attached a tiny little camera to her and we could see exactly what Pupy does and sees throughout the day and night.” My next thought was, “but that’s not what this sanctuary is all about.” Thank God for that.
