The Asian elephants have a good understanding of how the yards and fences are laid out in their habitats. They’re used to roaming from one space to another, so they know where the gates are between fenced-in areas. That doesn’t stop them from “losing” each other on occasion. Mara and Rana got separated on different sides of the fence and, for some reason, they temporarily couldn’t seem to figure out how to get to each other.
The two elephants managed to find one another eventually, which led to some not-entirely-unexpected rumbles and squeaks. Mara moved in close to Rana, lifting her foot in playfulness and then touching her gently on the face with her trunk. In the meantime, Rana’s tail began to stick straight out as she continued her low rumbles. After the excitement had worn off, the two walked off into Yard 5 where they spent the day together, perhaps side-by-side, as they often are.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

June 26, 2025 at 3:09 pmWhat a lovely video and always enjoy hearing Scott talk to the girls and calm them down. Mara’s sweet little touches and Rana’s happy flappies made my day! It looked like Rana had a little booboo on her front right leg, hope all is ok and hope it wasn’t a mean old bug bite or anything!! ❤️🐘❤️

June 26, 2025 at 3:14 pmThat’s actually something that pops up periodically. Captive elephants can get pressure sores from laying down on hard, unnatural surfaces. So she has a couple of spots that have been there since before sanctuary and we treat them when they show up.

June 27, 2025 at 12:33 amSo nice to see the ears flapping. I think the low contented rumbles are like a cat’s purring. They get so much from each other.
