Sunday Smile: Pupy’s Charcoal Paint

May 25, 2025

African elephant Pupy standing in the habitat with a charcoal streak on her faceThis week’s Sunday Smile is a charming-yet-silly picture of Pupy at her late night check-in. Scott and Kat went down for a night feed with Pupy and she emerged from the trees wearing a smudge from a burned tree.

As we mentioned in a prior post, Pupy has been knocking down and playing with trees that were left in the habitat after a fire on the sanctuary property. We left the trees in place in case the female African elephants wanted something to knock around in their free time. You can see that Pupy took full advantage of the opportunity. We’re not sure if she was just tussling with the burned trees or actually eating them, but we’re not worried since we know the charcoal is from trees and can actually have health benefits, so Pupy is doing what elephants naturally do: looking for new things to play with and healthy things to eat!

Pupy wants to Feng Shui her new home! That eyeball; she looks like she got caught with her hand in the cookie jar. Pretty girl!
