Pupy is Creating Pathways

African elephant Pupy walking through a wooded areaIt was nighttime and we went to the barn to give Pupy her evening meal. She headed toward the barn from out in Yard 3 when she heard us, so we decided to quickly pack her food up and drive out to where she was coming from. We’d rather encourage her to explore and find new favorite places rather than stay near the barn. Though we don’t discourage her from visiting the barn, it’s nice to meet her where she is, rather than create a habit of her feeling like she needs to come to the care center for food.

As everybody knows, elephants can perk up when they hear the 4-wheeler coming, since it often means that food is arriving. Generally, we lead the elephants to a safe spot where we place their hay, grains, and produce (giving us enough space to put their food down). We are used to riding somewhat slowly on the 4-wheeler, staying outside of the fence but keeping along the path on the other side. Traditionally, the Asian elephants follow at a mosey speed, but African elephants walk much faster. So, while we’re used to keeping a relaxed and steady pace for the other girls, Pupy’s speed is much faster, and we can drive along the fence at almost normal speed, especially when she’s on the move.

Pupy is creating trails through the yards wherever she goes and, believe it or not, every pathway doesn’t involve her moving trees out of her way. There are plenty of grassy areas deeper in the habitat. We are placing snacks along these new paths, just as we do for the Asian elephants, so that she can search for them after we leave, giving her even more reasons to explore and find her newest favorite places in the yards.

P.S.: We’re excited to announce the second annual Trunks & Treasures online auction, happening June 13–23, where you’ll have the opportunity to bid on rare items and memory-making experiences while supporting the ongoing efforts to bring Kenya and Tamy to sanctuary. A special live auction event will take place on June 21 that you won’t want to miss. Mark your calendars and find out more about how you can be part of this exciting event.

I imagine Pupy is enjoying tracking her food in the habitat. Tastes better when she finds it.🥰🍃

I love how you cater to Pupy, making sure she doesn’t feel confined to one area, but giving her a choice on where she can enjoy her food.
You are all amazing people. ❤️
