Kenya’s Personality Shined Through

Kenya was a distinctive elephant. She was a big girl with big ears and a super-big personality. Her energy wound its way across the sanctuary, and she seemed able to access such great joy, even after decades of confinement. We believe that we witnessed her becoming more in touch with her elephant self and with nature, as each day passed by. When we looked at her, we no longer saw the gray, vacant stare of an elephant who was trapped by her circumstances. We saw a free spirit in search of a place to relax, to play, and to expend all the energy she needed.

Though she was curious, she was also incredibly sweet. This video shows so many aspects of her personality: her confident ownership of her new surroundings, her personable nature, her curiosity, and her power. She had the strength to down this large tree in the sanctuary, and she had the fortitude to face the future with the idea that change was possible. Kenya found a comfy spot in all of our hearts, and we’ll treasure that warmth we feel for years to come.

P.S.: Join Kenya’s Celebration of Life, on Saturday, December 20 at 11 a.m. EST / 4 p.m. UTC, streamed live on our Facebook page and YouTube channel. If you’re not able to join us live, the recording will be available on her memorial page afterward. Visit her memorial page and leave a note here: https://globalelephants.org/in-memory-of-kenya/

Kenya stole all of our hearts with her big personality, her curiosity, her exuberance and her joy at all of the new experiences’ sanctuary had to offer. I think all of us longed for her to know true companionship and are saddened that really didn’t get to happen for her. She worked so hard to keep her exuberance in check so Pupy would be comfortable and yes, they did become friends, but it was so brief. Too brief for Pupy and too brief for Kenya. I feel honored that we got to know this incredible lady and Kenya has left a lasting impression on all of our hearts and lives.

Kenya, you opened many hearts to the plight of elephants. Through your story, you showed many people how sad the life of elephants in captivity is.
You will remain in our hearts. Farewell, Kenya, and may you find peace in Rainbow Land.

They are acting pretty normal, to be honest. They haven’t given an indication that they’re unsettled, but of course that doesn’t mean that they don’t know what’s been going on.

Thank you so much for this post. Kenya was definitely ‘larger than life’ and I’m so happy she got a chance to discover herself. and to truly be an elephant! And I’m happy we got to experience that and get to know her. Thank you for that GSE Team!!!
It’s about quality of life. Not quantity. We all hoped to spend years admiring Kenya’s massive “powers of destruction” and antics and her pensive, thoughtful moods and play sessions in her beloved mud wallow. That was not to be and the loss hurts. But, as I learned after my husband passed, memories are forever. Take comfort in knowing she is not in pain.
