Sorrowfully, we want to share with you that Kenya passed away this morning. We know you’ve been carefully walking alongside her as she dealt with physical challenges recently, and all of your energy was present and encircled Kenya throughout these difficult days. Rarely has an elephant been surrounded by such love from around the world. We know that she impacted all of you and, just as we mourn and begin to do all of the necessary things that must be done in devastating moments like this, we feel her spirit all around.
After multiple days of showing no signs of lying down, Kenya did eventually lie down last night. She seemed to settle a little and her breathing became easier. Until that point, she’d been breathing more heavily than we would have liked, so it was good to see her getting some deep breaths in and finally relaxing some. She didn’t stir all night that we could see, not even moving her legs around; she was clearly tired. This morning, her eyes were a little bigger, but she was still calm. Both caregiver Michele and Scott were with her all night, keeping watch but giving her space so she could rest knowing that they were there. Eventually, her breathing changed and she let out a quiet baby trumpet as she passed away quickly and gently.
Right now, we can still envision her doing her little tap dances and making her silly noises, being the beautifully big spirit that inspired us to call her “our dragon.” There’s a huge void at the sanctuary now that she’s gone–about as big as we’ve ever felt. Kenya seemed to find a way to reach thousands of hearts by just being herself. With affection, we think back on her early days and how it seemed like she was bigger than the physical space around her, her personality was so immense; she was larger than life. She contained so many things at once: childlike wonder, insecurity, joy, love, and a passion to explore. She was somehow able, after decades alone, to have an awareness of the needs of another, reaching out to Pupy with thoughtfulness and sensitivity. Their bond took time to grow, but that’s part of what made it so substantial.
We’ve been in contact with the university about her necropsy, which will be done this afternoon most likely. As many of you know, results take months, but we will share more when we know. In the meantime, we are preparing Kenya’s resting place, which will be next to Pupy. Thank you for all of the love and support you sent to Kenya over the past months, and for all of the kind words for our sanctuary team. She may have physically left us, but she will be in our hearts forever.
This video was taken of Kenya about a week and a half ago and her spirit really shines through.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

December 16, 2025 at 9:53 amI’m so sorry for all of us for this loss, it’s hard to type through tears. ☹️ I certainly hope you’ll be able to bring more African Elephants to the sanctuary. Oh how we’ll miss this lady as we have missed Pupy.
I can only say she’s at peaceful rest and is now with her other elephant friends and family.

December 16, 2025 at 9:59 amThis is just devastating for all of us – she and Pupy didn’t have much time to enjoy their new found freedom but all of you at GEO made their time with you the best it could be.
Might there be something in the environment at GEO that the African elephants cannot tolerate?
Thoughts and prayers go out to all.

January 12, 2026 at 4:55 amI have wondered about this too, that it might be something in the plant life, or even something lacking. I’m sure Scott and Kat have too, but it would be nice to get some insight on it.

December 16, 2025 at 10:00 amI felt this coming and was focusing hard on her doing what was best for her. My heart beats for her and Pupy. She and Pupy waited to transition at sanctuary; their paradise into forever. My deepest heartfelt condolences to everyone at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil…💔❤️❤️

December 16, 2025 at 10:02 amIt was meant to be that Kenya had her wonderful last 5 mos at GSE with the introduction of a natural environment, her freedom to choose how she spent her days/nights, an elephant friend in Pupy, and the special loving care from GSE sending daily updates to the world. Thank you Kenya for your beauty in every way.

December 16, 2025 at 10:02 amI am sorry to learn of the passing of Kenya. A beautiful elephant that we will all miss. Her presence in the sanctuary was wonderful because she learned that FREEDOM did exist and the feeling was the best feeling in the world.
Thank you sanctuary.

December 16, 2025 at 10:03 amSweet, wonderful, inspiring Kenya. Rest now, Beautiful Girl, you are truly home now. Back with Pupy and all the others welcoming you home. To everyone at Sanctuary, sending comfort and love to all of you as you work through this devastating time. Thank God she was able to make it home to Sanctuary for the time she had left, to know freedom and choice and to find a friend in Pupy. The depths of sadness are so big right now. I keep telling myself that grief is love with nowhere to go. I will keep channeling that love to my memories of Kenya and all the other souls we have had to mourn. Thank you Scott and Kat and all at Sanctuary for giving yourselves so fully to caring for Kenya while she was there. Love you all so very much. ❤️🐘❤️

December 16, 2025 at 10:05 amOooh noooo. I am beyond sad. I had a feeling we were going to lose her. 🐘 Sometimes it seems they arrive @ Sanctuary with such profound health issues which are not able to be healed, repaired or resolved.
She was a magical elephant & like Pupy, Pocha, Lady, Ramba & Guida, all had such a very short time being at Sanctuary & out of captivity. I am happy all these ladies passed among family both with their sisters & their humans, living the end of their lives making their own decisions every day.
Devasting. Heartbreaking. Crying rivers of tears that we lost another magnificent African Queen 👑
Extending love & sympathy to Scott, Kat & all @ GES/ESB. Also love to Mara, Rana, Maia, Bambi & Guille… may they have many years left.
I am unbelievably depressed & incredibly sad 😭💔🌈

December 16, 2025 at 10:32 amEven if an elephant just has a few months at sanctuary, every day is worth it. We are glad she got to spend her last days somewhere she could be free and not in a barren enclosure. It’s always difficult when an elephant passes, but we’d be heartbroken to see another soul die in a cold and unwelcoming environment, much like Tamy, Kuky, Merry, and so many others did.
Gigi says
December 17, 2025 at 7:45 amI completely agree with you, Sara! If Kenya could have spoken to you before leaving this world, I’m sure she would have thanked you for this extraordinary adventure where she finally felt she could exist and not just be the shadow of an elephant… She would have told you she was happy and that every minute was worth it.
Even though it was far too short, you fulfilled your mission, GSE. And I sympathize with your immense grief. Be proud of yourself!
Unlike those who doubt, if I could get Lucy from Edmonton to you, even if she had to spend two days in an airport and a whole week on the road, I would do it without hesitation. I have complete faith in you, and you are heroes in my heart.
Dear Kenya, knowing that you suffered so much and for so long softens my sorrow at seeing you leave. I still think about Tamy and I so wish he could have had a peaceful end, surrounded by love and serenity too…
To the whole team, stay strong and continue your important mission.
With love, and all my sympathies, from Canada

December 16, 2025 at 10:25 amI am so glad Kenya got to know sanctuary and the freedom it meant, and that – after a lifetime of loneliness – she knew what it was to have an elephant companion in Pupy. I imagine Pupy was waiting to greet her and be with her again.
I have a feeling everyone there knew this was probably coming over the last few days…. so happy it was peaceful and her little trumpet was definitely her way of saying farewell and thank you to all there who loved her and cared for her so much.
Rest well Kenya. All our love goes with you on this journey.

December 16, 2025 at 10:26 amI am so sorry for her passing, but joyful in the knowledge that she was able to know sanctuary in her final months. Thank you for getting her there, and encouraging her all along the way. My heart goes out to you and your staff.

Now Kenya can be with Pupy with no more pain. Death is a doorway to tremendous transformation. She will be her lovely selfcagain and she will bless all of her caretakers who after years of suffering showed. Her a good life filled with all her favorite earthly things and most of all no more fear just loving kindness. Rest in eternal Peace Kenya and say hello to your friend Pupy😘😘😘

December 16, 2025 at 10:40 amThank you for having shared with us the recent issues about her.
I feel deeply touched, as all your followers.
I was a Kenya’s fan.
I don’t have more words to describe the feeling
Animals, we included, are here for a limited períod.of time and that is part of life.
I loved her the moment I Saw her for the First time, in a vídeo while she was in Argentina.
I Will Love that creature forever.
I Just wonder If there are anything in common in both Puppy and Kenya’s passing, since their passing seemed too early.
You are not alone!
Hugs for ALL
Kenya forever!

December 16, 2025 at 10:45 amDear GSE-family, my deepest condolences with the loss of our angelic Kenya. This can’t be right, really too much to bear. I feared after your first message of breathing issues, this will be too much. Thank for caring so deeply for Kenya. Just like Pupy she was able to connect to my heart and soul. What a wonderful world would this be without the brutal captivity for our fellow animals. R.I.P. Kenya, l will cherish you forever.
Yasmin says
December 16, 2025 at 10:48 amOur beautiful, curious, comical Kenya. She finally experienced what her life should hold: making an elephant friend, then showing concern for her friend when she died and feeling that loss, having so much space to roam, toppling trees and eating wild growing plants, bathing in mud, and getting the physical and emotional care she needed. Like all of you, my heart is broken and I will continue to cry for a while. The grief is truly overwhelming.
Thank you to your whole team for all you did for this beauty, giving her all she truly deserved.
I pray that the loss of both Pupy and Kenya does not cause you to hesitate in bringing more African elephants to the sanctuary. Even a few months in the heaven of the sanctuary has been a wonder for them both.
RIP Kenya…may you and Pupy meet again wherever your spirits go.

December 16, 2025 at 10:48 amThe update I didn’t want to see. I’m sorry. I am so sorry. Still at a loss grieving for Pupy and now Kenya. I loved these girls so much. I became Pupy’s EleGuardian, then transferred to Kenya when Pupy died. My sincerest condolences to everyone at GSE. I can’t imagine what you all are going through. Such devastating loss of both these girls. They experienced love, freedom, peace, and home because of your love for them. You fought so hard for their freedom and I know even for a short time being in the sanctuary, it was all worth it. Thank you GSE. Sending love to each of you. Be at peace now Kenya. May you take the memory of GSE with you. I love you sweet baby

December 16, 2025 at 11:26 amDevastating! The rumors of Kenya’s plight and possible relocation to ESB many years ago is what brought me to the ESB family. For many years my heart ached for Kenya’s release from horrendous captivity. Now I must console myself that she had an elephant friend, Miss Pupy, a natural habitat, and humans who loved her. I also imagine that God has embraced Kenya and whispered her pain is over. I’m so sorry, ESB, for your loss!

December 16, 2025 at 6:37 pmOhhhhhh, how sad! Do you think Kenya was that much affected by Pupy’s passing? Well, I am glad, that at least she was loved and treated kindly and “free”. Thank you for caring for her. Thanks to you she knew what kindness is!

December 16, 2025 at 9:29 pmI’m very sad to hear this. 😢💔 I’m glad Kenya had time to enjoy life at the sanctuary before passing even though her time with you was too short. I’m also happy Kenya found a friend in Pupy. My sympathies to all of you at the sanctuary and my heartfelt thanks for all you do to make the lives better for these precious elephants.

December 17, 2025 at 9:45 amI am so sorry for…………….all of us. Thank you for reminding us all of Kenya’s spirit, not that it could ever be forgotten. I don’t know how she did it, but YES, ITA, she reached out and grabbed my love instantly. She was so present, so her, so Kenya…..bigger than life itself it seemed. I guess that’s why I thought she’d make it. I wish, I wish, I wish……so many things. I hope she feels all of our love right now. Thank you so much for all everyone did for her, especially to Michele and Scott for being there with her and telling us of her last moments and making them peaceful. May her and Pupy perfect their friendship now, I only wish they could have done that here.

December 18, 2025 at 12:27 pmI am utterly devastated to hear of our beloved Kenya’s passing. So sorry that her time at GSE was way too short but extremely grateful that she was able to experience the freedom to roam, the love, care and everything that this beautiful sanctuary has to offer. Also so grateful that she was surrounded by love in her final moments and could go peacefully.
My sincerest condolences to Scott, Kat and the entire team at GSE. Thank you for your dedication and all the work you do for the elephants. Sending you all love and hugs during this very difficult time.
