Pupy’s Walk

As you can see, Pupy is developing a more confident strut. She’s still unsure of some things, but is taking it all in stride, pushing herself but not appearing stressed. She has come so far in just a few days. Friday evening, she left her container and by Saturday at the end of the day, she’d stepped out of the barn for the first time. On Sunday, she explored up to 30 meters away, and by Monday she was at the furthest corner of Yard 1.

Tuesday, she was starting to feel more comfortable in her surroundings, seeming to take pleasure in knocking down some smaller trees and wrestling with bushes. By Wednesday, Pupy had participated in a treatment session and become more confident in finding spots that suited her mood. She is staying out of the barn for hours at a time now. It seems there’s no stopping Pupy, though she is taking things in at an easy pace. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: we’re proud of how quickly she’s progressing. That’s important, but it’s just as important to remember that she’s been given autonomy and making choices can be scary when you haven’t had to make any real decisions in decades. She’s definitely a trooper.

Are there any watering holes in her yards for her to take a dip?

She has a mud wallow and will have a pond once the expansion is complete.

I think we have to remember she’s still a relatively young elephant, so she’s really ready to be the physical being she never had the opportunity to be. Love to see it!

Yes, she has trumpeted. It’s not happening too often, but she has been heard up the hill trumpeting in the evening,

It’s a whole new world for her to discover. Just the sounds & smells of other elephants, that I can’t wait for her to meet. I’m sure that will take some time,
I’m just loving the videos of her doing her thing, finding everything, like the mud pool, all the trees, grasses, just the expanse of the Sanctuary.
Being confined for so many years. This is truly an amazing place to her.
