Pupy’s Confident Walk

It was breakfast and, once again, caregivers fed Pupy and Kenya in adjoining stalls in the barn. Pupy has her undecided moments where she still seems to be analyzing Kenya’s behaviors, but she also has moments when she’s on her own and appears confident as can be. This is a quick little video showing Pupy walking–perhaps even strutting–along the fence line after eating her meal.

Once the two elephants enjoyed their morning snacks, Pupy took a stroll from the barn to the tree line, looking for treats that might be hidden in the grass or the trees. Caregivers frequently place stashes of special surprises throughout the habitat, in various places each day. The elephants are used to this and know there’s good stuff out there for them; they just have to look around to find it. It keeps their brains working and their muscles in motion.

Pupy’s body language is calm and easy, perhaps reflecting her new state of mind. You might notice that there’s a downed tree along the side of the pathway. It’s just more evidence of the new life these two African elephants are embracing every single day.

It is so beautiful to watch these Girls embracing their homes and making them their own. I think about them feeling safe and brave at the same time and just having the opportunity to make their own choices, something I so often take for granted. Thank you, as always, to everyone at sanctuary! ❤️🐘❤️
