The ladies here love our ponds. Swimming and splashing and pond blobbing are among their favorite things to do. Even Bambi, who doesn’t necessarily go all the way into the water, enjoys standing on the banks and playing in the squishy mud.
Dry season is not kind to our man-made ponds and mud wallows which, in the past, we’ve kept filled with recycled water and water from on-site springs. The dry season also brings with it the worry of fire and the potential for an increased need for water. As a way to ease those concerns and to make sure the girls’ needs are met, we now have a brand new well that produces a lot of water.
With plans for a new barn in the future, this will play a large role in making sure that we don’t put unnecessary strain on the natural resources on the land. The people are happy and, most importantly, the elephants will have more than enough water to play all year long.
