Guillermina had a teachable moment recently, when she walked away with some of Maia’s hay and received a gentle reprimand. This week, Pocha and Guillermina have been sharing yards with Bambi, Maia, Mara, and Rana –
so Guille now has opportunities to show the new social skills that she’s been learning.
On a recent morning, she and Pocha saw Maia in the yard grazing. Guille seemed to consider her options on how to greet Maia and opted for a more submissive approach – walking toward her backward. Once there, Guille didn’t just take a bite of Maia’s hay and walk away, as she did last time. Instead, she stood next to Maia and shared a snack, which is appropriate social behavior in a herd and was received much better by Maia. Clearly, Guillermina learned a little something from her prior encounter. Guille will likely need more instruction on how to create healthy boundaries and interact in respectful ways with each elephant. But, on this morning, she and Pocha made a “Maia sandwich,” standing on either side of Maia. All were nice and calm, and it was a very charming silhouette.

June 27, 2022 at 2:10 pmThis is such a great development! So good to hear that Guillermina is “teachable,” and that she seems to learn quickly, even with gentle lessons. I’m excited to see how her personality continues to mature in the weeks and months ahead. It’s also wonderful to know that Pocha and Guille seem to be comfortable spending time with the other ladies during the day … Have there been any more interactions between Lady and Guille or Pocha?

June 27, 2022 at 2:24 pmOther than the moment last week when Lady almost touched Guille, there haven’t been any more interactions between Lady and the two new elephants.
