Afternoon Check-in With Pupy

Pupy is doing wonderfully today and is beginning to embrace sanctuary life with gusto. She’s wandering further and further from the barn lately, which is impressive, considering how new everything is to her. So, Scott cannot film a live video for the best of reasons: because Pupy has roamed out of wi-fi signal range. He’s been encouraging her to walk down the fence line, deeper into the habitat, as you can see here. We’re trying to assure her that it’s safe to step outside of her comfort zone and find out what sanctuary has to offer her.

We’ve seen evidence that she’s been exploring at night in the form of torn branches, downed trees, and tusk marks in tree bark. She’s redecorating the habitat in the most perfect of ways. This is what sanctuary was designed for: to allow elephants like the Asian elephants who have been here–and now Pupy–to reclaim their natural instincts and become who they were always meant to be.

They are very different in temperament and communication style. African elephants are demonstrative and their play behaviors could be seen by Asian elephants as aggression. For everyone’s safety, we believe that it’s best practice for them to have separate habitats.
