What an Elephant Slide Looks Like

http://https://youtu.be/JqqggbCR_zo

It would have been great to be able to show you one of the girls going down this slide to the creek, but Maia was way too fast (as is usually the case) and Guida didn’t come. But we still thought it was good to show so people can understand just how capable they are. We may try and purchase a camera trap on our next visit home.

This is actually the smaller of the two main slides they use to cross this stream. It’s hard to see but there is a step down and then the slide. There are days that Maia and Guida will go back and forth over this crossing several times, even though there are easier areas to cross. They seem to like it.

We haven’t seen Rana use either of the slides. She has crossed the creek at the easy crossings and may not yet feel up to this kind of adventure. Maia and Guida took a long time to build up their strength and Rana has a long way to go. Older elephants generally seem to know their limits and go when they are ready. Thankfully, other herd members seem to understand as well and will give up on their own adventure to wait behind with another elephant.

Thats pretty steep!! They certainly are capable, and the muscle strength must have hugely improved. Really great to see this!
