For this Sunday Smile, we’re getting an up-close look at Kenya’s red, dirt and mud-coated skin. You’ve all certainly noticed that once an elephant arrives at sanctuary, they tend to start dusting very quickly. It seems to be innate in them to return to natural behaviors. In Kenya’s case, once she emerged from her crate, she decided to smush her face into a dirt pile in the barn, getting a bath at the same time. Today, Kenya can often be found throwing dirt around or getting nice and muddy in Club Mud, the mud wallow. In this video, she and Scott share a quiet moment in between Kenya’s explorations and possible future dirt baths.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

August 17, 2025 at 7:25 pmWhy do elephants stand with one foot up, usually one of their front feet? She really seems to like being close to humans. I think she looks pretty in red. I love when you show us her eye because you can look into them like inside their soul. She makes me smile
