It was morning after breakfast and time for Rana’s treatment. She came over to the barn, while Mara stayed in Yard 1. Normally, Mara comes to the barn with Rana, but she opted not to this time, instead staying outside to eat hay and make lots of rumbles. Rana was making a calling rumble in response, which is a little bit louder and higher energy. We’re not sure why she was calling to Mara, but Mara seemed happy where she was. Rana did finally settle in for treatment, although she was rumbly and periodically called Mara throughout.
This video was taken after Rana exited the barn and found Mara. Normally, Mara would just say hello and then want to come into the barn as well. But you can see here that the two elephants go back to where Mara had been eating hay. There were lots of little trumpets and rumbles at their reunion, as Scott explains in the recording. Still, while they were celebrating, Rana often looked to Middle Road, towards the pond in Yard 4, where the other girls were playing. (You can see what Maia, Bambi, and Guillermina were doing by reading yesterday’s post.) Overall, it was a day of friends celebrating being together and truly appreciating each other’s company.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

July 24, 2024 at 9:07 amI looked up synonyms for sanctuary which I feel apply to what the GSE is for these dear creatures: haven, oasis, harborage, anchorage and stronghold. Bravo to all the people who help provide this!
