Rana has been known in the past for testing caregivers to see how they respond to her, and if they are paying close attention. She has a trickster side of her personality that she seems to use to determine if she can potentially “get away” with things – but not in a malicious way. It’s important for her to know that, when interacting with her, you will see past the cute exterior and recognize the complexities inside.
When Ingo was recently doing some foot trimming on Rana, she pretended that she couldn’t lift one of her feet, which we knew very well she was capable of doing. Ingo, who has years of experience as a caregiver, but who is also learning the nuances of working with the elephants here, casually moved on to another foot. The next day he returned to the foot Rana supposedly couldn’t lift, and she was happy to oblige. He never became impatient or demanding with her, and it allowed her to see that he was tuned in to her, and a bit savvy to her antics.
Needless to say, things are progressing nicely and everyone continues to learn, teach, and grow from their experiences.
