Pupy Splashes

May 20, 2025

Get ready for some delightful muddy goodness! Pupy has really taken to the mud wallow, which is plumbed so it will always have plenty of water to play in. Here, Pupy’s African elephant behaviors make themselves known, as we see her kick, twist her trunk around, and even kneel down, squishing her face in the mud. The Asian elephant ladies have been known to get incredibly silly themselves, splashing and spraying muddy water all over, but Pupy is just more demonstrative in many of her behaviors.

In fact, for a couple of moments, Pupy fully reclines in the wallow, and gets up absolutely covered in mud. You can see it drip from her head and the sides of her body. At one point, she even uses her tusks to dig in the soft clay underneath where she was lying. Across the board–whether Asian or African elephants–all of the girls here enjoy a soothing mud bath. It’s great for playing in, cooling off, protecting their skin from the sun, and keeping bugs away. Plus, it’s just a fun way to spend an afternoon.

P.S.: If you’re in search of the elephant with the hairiest tail, you’ll have to seek out Guillermina. Though Pupy has more hair on her tail than most of the Asian elephants, Guille still holds the title for fuzziest flyswatter.

What a simple, beautiful enjoyment for her!
Is there any indication that Pupy’s trunk is getting stronger with all the extra use?

She’s definitely getting some good practice using her trunk for new things. But it will take some more time to see real improvement.

Pupy says she thinks she has distant memories of a bigger pond, but this is pretty darn satisfying!

There will be a pond in the expansion that’s currently being built. But interestingly enough, African elephants often seem to care less about ponds than Asian elephants. We’ll be curious to see how they respond.

What a beautiful elephant. Very glad and happy that he/she finally got her freedom. No animal should be suffered on the earth. Many thanks to the people who truly love them.

She is just loving it. Now, that’s what I call a true muddy butt-y. For a brief moment, all’s right with the world 🌍
