People sometimes think elephants are indiscriminate eaters, but that is rarely the case. With the little ‘fingers’ on the end of their trunks, they will pick individual berries from a bush. Elephants like Guida will eat single leaves and sift through saplings for the perfect section of vines.
Rana comes in once a day so we can treat her vulva (an issue she arrived with), and when she does, we offer her a bite to eat. This video shows her technique when it comes to eating banana leaves. Many elephants will strip larger leaves this way, although they will then also eat the stalk.
