This afternoon, we went looking for Mara and Rana, who were in Yard 4. We drove toward one of the more remote areas where we thought they’d be (sometimes they head into wooded sections of the trees at night), but they were nowhere to be found. Eventually, we got into the area near the pond, and we saw two heads pop up over the water.
Slowly, Rana and Mara wandered over to dinner after some time dusting themselves off, possibly to prevent bug bites. Elephants are very efficient in that way, even though we do provide them with natural bug spray. The two elephants enjoyed the fresh grass, which had been cut prior to the rainy season’s start, so it was at the perfect height for snacking. Their favorite kind grows in abundance just outside the fence, as well as throughout their yards, so we cut some and added it to their afternoon habitat surprise treats. Mara was so excited about the fresh, green stalks of grass that she walked away from her fruits and vegetables to savor a few bites. Once they’d finished eating most of their food, we headed on our way, watching both girls happily munching and flapping away.
This photo shows Mara (left) and Rana (right) under the trees. Rana has been caught mid-ear flap.
