Making Time for Everyone

After a recent night feed, the energy coming from all of the girls felt really positive. Everyone seemed pleased to be out and about. Mara seemed to be feeling good that night and was eating well. Rana, Mara, and Bambi were acting particularly sweet.

Mara, Rana, and Bambi were gathered together out in the far reaches of the habitat, so Lady decided to join us at the barn. We thought it would be a nice occasion to give her some space all to herself, to roam and explore and create a special time that was just for her. We opened up between Yards 4 and 5 for the three girls and Maia, since they are the larger yards – and we opened up Yards 1 through 3 for Lady, which she hasn’t had to herself since Mara experienced her abdominal gas bout. She also seemed light and energized, pleased to have this time to relax and think and feel whatever was on her mind that evening.

All of our elephants have different personalities and emotional needs. On that evening, it was a treat to see each individual’s personality come out, being exactly who they are.

Hey GSE, with it coming up on 6 months since the fire, would you give us an update on how you guys are doing? Have you been able to get everything fixed and replaced that was fire damaged, or is that still a work in progress? Has the neighborhood around your property recovered, or are you still seeing evidence of the fire? Are there still problems from the fire that you guys have to deal with? Even from afar, we worry about you, and hope things are ok!

  We are 2/3 of the way through the rain season, and the fires feel like a lifetime ago. Aside from lots of dead trees, you would never know a fire came through here. The pastures look great. Fire can be healing to nature, although it is definitely not something we would look forward to again. I think most everything is fixed, although the wildlife center is not done. We ended up having to take in different wildlife with fire injuries, and it was quicker to repair what had previously existed than start over from scratch, although that is still the plan. Erosion is the one ongoing problem from the fire. With so much of the underbrush gone, when we have big storms, there is nothing holding the water back, so there has been more erosion this season than normal. But we are also having a lot more rain this season, which none of us are complaining about. Thanks for asking. 🙂

Does Lady emote vocally very much? I love her joy so much in this! Just curious (after watching the Bambi gets lost in Yard 1 vid again, what a hoot! and so much sound…) if she cuts loose like the Merry 3 seem to do on the reg.

  she rumbles and trumpets. on occasion she has her little parties of one where she makes other noises as well.
