Maia Meets Pocha and Guillermina

Maia has been spending part of her days exploring in Yard 4, often sharing space with Bambi, Mara, and Rana. Because, during the day, Maia positioned herself in a way that made it easy for her to access Yard 3, we opened up for her to see if she  was interested in coming to the barn and possibly meeting Pocha and Guillermina through the fence.

Both Pocha and Guillermina were curious about Maia, who had her big personality on display. It’s possible that she wanted to test how they would respond to her strong presence, setting up long-term relationship herd dynamics for who would be most dominant.

Pocha was receptive to touching Maia, while Guille stood somewhat to the side. As you can see here, Pocha did not engage with Maia’s assertiveness and stayed soft throughout the interaction. Guillermina only physically touched Maia a few times, and both were passive; the majority of the interaction was between Pocha and Maia. After a short time, Maia seemed to become bored of the scenario and walked off into Yard 3, leaving Pocha and Guillermina to smell everything that she had touched once she was gone.

How long was Maia visiting Pocha & Guillermina? Although the precious video was a minute, I suspect she was there longer?

It was about 12-13 minutes total, we’d estimate. Maia walked away after about 10 minutes and then came back for a short time.

I must admit I was so waiting for this first meeting but was so nervous when it was finally happening! Not about any physical hurt of course (the fences are there and our girls are all so gentle!) but the emotional tumult. It must have been epic event for Pocha ad GiGi! Another elephant, one of their own, at long last! So glad it was so soft and gentle and slow. Pocha did not touch Maia. She just let her touch her. And that silence….so unusual for our duo! Amazing encounter…..one to re watched and treasure….Will be awaiting more as time goes by…xoxoxox
