It’s been quite warm at the sanctuary lately. On particularly hot days, we will often give the elephants homemade “popsicles,” which are made from Gatorade diluted half with water and cut-up fruit. Rana and Mara loved the treats. Maia and Guille appreciated theirs as well, but Bambi didn’t want hers at all and it ended up on the ground.
Maia took Bambi’s frozen snack in her nose, but ended up deciding to grab a palm branch as well. She was chewing and chewing the palms and holding her popsicle, which Scott warned her would melt if she didn’t eat it. She held both the branch and the popsicle in her trunk for a little while, then finally ate the palm first. Afterward, she got around to the popsicle and you can hear the satisfying crunch it makes when she bites down on it.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

September 2, 2024 at 2:46 pmMaybe she’s sensitive to cold in her mouth. I am and don’t like ice, popsicles or anything else really cold.

September 2, 2024 at 6:12 pmWhen she rolled the popsicle up her trunk I wondered if the cold was an interesting or new feeling.
Loved the care she took not to drop the popsicle as she tried to figure out how to grasp a palm leaf.
Wonderful video.
