Prior to the dry season, we bushhog the yards to make sure that the grass is short, so that it stays nice for the elephants. We alternate where we cut, so there’s always some fresh-cut grass growing around the habitat. There is some new growth currently in the area of Guida’s grave in Yard 5. When the caregivers were cleaning Yard 4, the larger group of girls shifted over to Yard 5 and the staff caught a glimpse of Maia and Guillermina grazing on Guida’s grave.
Generally, when Maia goes into Yard 5, she heads across the creek – which is a place where she and Guida used to spend time. But we don’t often see elephants in the area of Guida’s grave. It was actually quite sweet that Maia and Guille were there together, especially since when they’re in Yard 5, they go to separate areas. They had a calm energy as they relaxed and had a snack near Maia’s old friend.

Where is Pocha’s grave located in the Sanctuary and does Guille show any indication that she is aware of the location.
It is wonderful that Guille had her Sanctuary herd to buffer the loss of her mother, and wasn’t left alone and bereft in that horrible pit.

August 29, 2023 at 5:54 pmPocha’s grave is in Yard 3, near the barn. Guille doesn’t visit the space specifically, but there’s no way of knowing what she’s aware of. It’s likely that she is aware of something.
