Mara and Rana were recently in Yard 2, and Lady was in Yard 3 when Scott went to feed Mara her early afternoon bonus-meal. Lady saw Scott calling Mara with a bucket of food and became very interested.
Mara was dusting and slow to walk over, so Lady arrived near the fence first. Mara made her “ERRR” noise and looked surprised when Lady approached. Scott shared a few pieces of fruit with Lady as Mara walked over. Once Scott started feeding Mara, Rana had to come over too. Rana walked around Mara to approach the fence. To Lady’s perspective, as Rana came around Mara, Rana popped out of nowhere. Startled, Lady took a few quick steps away but then turned around to remain nearby.
Lady stayed near the other two for a few hours. She ended up eating dinner further away but was back near Rana & Mara for the late-night feeding. Again, the humans were hand-feeding buckets of fruit to Mara, and Lady was intrigued. She was content to stay a bit away and eat her hay while observing the others.
Photo of Lady (near), Mara on the other side of the fence, and Rana just behind Mara. (The hand is Scott).

November 2, 2020 at 5:43 pmSweet, sweet Lady. It’s hard not to want her to be more “into” the others – I want her to have friends and companionship. But as GSE so wonderfully teaches, it’s not what we humans want, but what the elephants need to heal – in their own time. I understand and wholly respect the safe environment you provide. I will (try to!) wait patiently for the day Lady decides it’s time to take another step towards companionship. Until then, I’m continually sending her loving vibes and praying for any healing she needs, emotionally and physically. ❤️
Thanks for the update. I didn’t notice Scott’s hand until I looked at the picture again ??

November 2, 2020 at 5:56 pmSweet Lady. The sanctuary environment is perfectly choreographed to allow Lady the opportunity to socialize in her very, very baby step way. And that is beautiful!

November 2, 2020 at 6:16 pmI noticed the red fruit then realised there was a human there. Three elephants and a human all close together. But Scott was safely tucked away from all three of them. He knows that a sudden elephant move could cause tragedy.

November 2, 2020 at 8:12 pmSweet Ms Lady, taking her own sweet time. I’m very happy for this. Food…the great motivator. Ms Lady got to see that she came close & nothing bad happened. It’s my guess that it’ll happen again soon. 🙂

November 2, 2020 at 9:32 pmLady is definitely The Leader of the Pack. A subtle politician, but there for Leadership. Slow but Steady wins the race, and it is apparent that Miss Lady has incredible patience and respect for her Gal Friends. Keep up the love and caring! Love you, and your great smile!

November 3, 2020 at 3:10 amHow lovely! Lady’s way of “socialising”. Bless her beautiful heart. Of course, I want Lady to be part of the herd but in her own way she is. It is not about what we want. It’s Lady’s choice and we go with it. So good to see her being braver and curious….for our love of Lady….it’s all about you, sweet angel!

November 3, 2020 at 1:38 pmEver so small baby steps for LadyBug in human eyes, but I think it is giant steps for our Lady. How wonderful that she is feeling more safe. I adore her. Someday I believe she will let go of the old fears that haunt her with the guidance and patience of GSE.

November 7, 2020 at 8:05 pmHi thank you as always for these beautiful moments shared with all of us; this one really gladdens my heart. Lady holds a special place for me – I can empathize with having sore feet. Anyway, is this the closest that Lady has gotten to the other ladies? Thank you.

November 9, 2020 at 7:30 pmThat we have seen, yes. They do get close when they are in the habitat together, about 20 yards away, but this was touching distance. She did it again today as well.
