Kenya’s Snacking Method

As you may have seen on Sunday’s post, Kenya is quite the fashionista when it comes to hay hats. You may note that the alfalfa hay she places atop her head doesn’t fall apart in the way the grass hay the Asian elephants eat does. She does get grass hey, but she prefers the alfalfa, so that is the type she takes to go. When girls like Guille and Maia play with their hay, it scatters more easily and therefore tends to get all over their heads and backs. (The Asian elephants don’t eat alfalfa hay, since it can generally have more protein than their systems effectively process.)

You would think that having such a dexterous trunk, Kenya would make good use of it to pick up her snacks, especially when they are so conveniently located. But many times, when she’s ready to have a bite, she will instead flap her ears very deliberately, or shake her head until the hay falls off. She uses the ear method here, which actually works quite effectively. It seems like a handy storage spot and she can have a treat at any point in the day she chooses!

Oh my God I love this. I remember when I first followed GSE, hearing Scott talk about elephants finding out who they are in sanctuary. I couldn’t envision how that would manifest itself. Now I can. This is Kenya!
