After breakfast, the caregivers were cleaning Yard 5, so the “Powerpuff Girls,” Maia, and Guillermina were all spending time in Yard 4. (Lady was in the male Asian yard.) All of a sudden, the caregivers heard the silly noises that Guille makes, so they knew that Guillermina must be close.
A short while later, they saw Guille and Maia walking nearby. The two elephants seemed only mildly curious about the caregivers until they saw the person holding the camera. It’s likely that they thought food might be available to them if humans were around. Guillermina walked up to the fence to get a closer look at what was going on, reaching out with her trunk. But, since there were no snacks to be had, she seemed to get disinterested and walked away.
Because Guille is such a fast walker, she got a good distance ahead of Maia, who was doing her own thing. Guille seemed to stop and wait for Maia to catch up. Maia was also briefly interested in the caregivers, perhaps also hoping for a little treat herself. Once she saw there was no food nearby, she returned to her walk right behind Guille. You can see that Maia is very gentle with her trunk, not being pushy or overbearing. Perhaps the more time Guillermina spends with Maia, the more gentle she may become.
