Happy 5th Re-Birthday, Rana!

As of today, Rana has been a treasured resident of Elephant Sanctuary Brazil for 5 years. Though she is older than the other elephants (and we lovingly call her the “grandma” of the group), Rana has the ability to seemingly get to the heart of the matter when it comes to helping other, younger elephants become a part of the larger sanctuary herd. She seems to have a sense of what they need and can adapt herself to help that individual adjust to her new life.

When we first met Rana, we weren’t sure exactly what she was really like, as she kept her true self close; indeed she seemed like a mystery, even to her keepers at the time. In those early days, she didn’t want contact with most people, let alone affection. She demanded food by throwing things at the people around her and was almost always rewarded for doing so. Now, she has a deep relationship with the caregivers who take the time to be focused on her needs and showing her the respect and openness she requires. Yes, Rana is gorgeous and a truly wonderful personality, but she is also an individual who knows what she wants and, if you’re paying attention, she will let you know what those things are and reward you for your consideration.

We truly count on Rana as a master communicator with other elephants. When Bambi first arrived, Bambi’s energy was a little much for the others, so she took some time away with Rana – just the two of them – and Bambi finally seemed to become increasingly at ease and more understanding of boundaries and respecting others. During the early days of Guillermina’s time at sanctuary, we would occasionally see Rana standing to the side with Guille, with both remaining calm and appearing to communicate with one another. It’s hard to imagine those first months without the easygoing presence of Rana, as she seemed to rally Mara and Bambi to the idea of a new and younger energy.

Rana is a true gift to all at sanctuary. Caregivers appreciate her willingness to participate in any treatment or care that is needed and the other elephants seem to treasure her presence and want to be with her often. It appears that she’s mastered the art of navigating relationships and cultivating bonds. But don’t let her age fool you; she knows how to start a party with the other girls and her trumpets and good nature can get the others going when it’s time to celebrate. And so celebrate we shall! Happy re-birthday, Rana, our great uniter and an affectionate member of the sanctuary herd.

It must be very satisfying for the sanctuary staff to have given Rana 5 years of an actual life back, previously lost. When moving them to sanctuary you obviously have no way of knowing how long they will potentially live and better yet, thrive. Rana seems to be thriving! Thank you!
