As the rain continued to fall this week, some of the elephants had tons of energy – perhaps more than expected. We found Bambi, Guillermina, and Maia in a group, which was somewhat surprising. They aren’t often together as a threesome, so the dynamics among them may be shifting somewhat. It will be interesting to see if they enjoy more time together in the future.
All three girls looked like they were having a fantastic time. They were chasing and rubbing up against each other. Bambi seemed to have the most energy at first, because she was running up and down the fence line for a couple of minutes; she also gave herself a thorough scratch on the tree. Maia and Guille got to a point where they were matching Bambi’s energy level, so all of them were playing in the mud, getting themselves all dirty and beautiful. Maia began to instigate more activity in the group, making for a high-energy day. The afternoon ended with the elephants dusting themselves with sand and getting more and more dirty. All in a day’s “work” for playful elephants.
