A Rainy Afternoon With Four Elephants

Even though we are squarely into the dry season, we got a surprise rain shower a couple of days ago. That made for lots of happy, wet elephants. Bambi and Maia were by the fence in Yard 5, taking a slow walk and getting delightfully damp. (Guille was off on her own, likely enjoying the rain and wandering.) Mara and Rana had walked from Yard 4 up to the barn for treatments, so we opened up the gates to allow the two groups of girls to spend time in neighboring yards, if they chose.

When the caregivers passed by later in the afternoon, Mara and Rana were walking toward where Bambi and Maia were standing by the fence in the next yard over. When those same caregivers headed down to bring the elephants’ their dinner, all of the girls were in the same area, around where the two yards meet. Everyone was calm and both groups were standing near one another, just snacking on some grass. Hearing the birds singing, the raindrops falling, and the soft chewing of the elephants made for a peaceful afternoon, where four elephants were basking in the rain and calmly sharing space, at least for a short while.
