It’s well known how much Maia (sometimes called our “pond blob”) loves the water. She will spend many sleepy hours in the pond or mud wallow. For this week’s Sunday Smile, we get a photo of Maia, wearing her finest hay shawl, spraying water in nearly a perfect circle. Happy Sunday!

October 7, 2024 at 12:30 pmI came across what looks like a very amazing story told in a book called “Elephant Company.” It’s the inspiring story of how elephants helped save lives in World War II. I didn’t get to read it; was displayed in a lobby of an old motel. Looked fascinating, and I shouldn’t be surprised by the story’s subject.

For Johnny and others interested, here’s the information on Elephant Company. My local library system has multiple copies and so may yours 🙂
Elephant Company: the inspiring story of an unlikely hero and the animals who helped him save lives in World War II by Croke, Vicki. Summary:
“At the onset of World War II, [Billy] Williams formed Elephant Company and was instrumental in defeating the Japanese in Burma and saving refugees, including on his own ‘Hannibal Trek,’ [becoming] a media sensation during the war, telling reporters that the elephants did more for him than he was ever able to do for them”–
