All of the girls have been spread out between Yards 4 and 5, with Rana and Mara pairing up while Maia, Bambi, and Guillermina have been together. But just because they’ve been spending a lot of time in two groups doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy each other’s company.
Here, Mara and Maia have found a mud wallow and are splashing around together, getting nice and dirty. Guillermina is nearby looking for leftovers when she finally decides to join in, moving at a fairly quick pace. You can see that Mara takes a pause to watch Guille’s approach. Guille meanwhile goes about her business of covering herself with mud, standing side-by-side with Maia. Mara eventually makes her exit from the mud wallow, but stays nearby for a while before seeking out Rana again. The two friends eventually found each other, though one of them was beautifully dirty upon their reunion.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

July 9, 2024 at 10:55 pmI find this ‘ mud thing” very intriguing. Does mud on an elephants skin lubricate it, cool it, and protect it from bugs all at once?
I know my skin has gotten super dried out and “cracky” when the muds cakes came off. And just for the record, I haven’t wallowing in mud very often!🤣

July 9, 2024 at 11:57 pmIt’s very cooling and acts as a protection against the sun and bugs. Maybe we should all spend more time in the mud. 😂

July 9, 2024 at 11:59 pmBambi wasn’t there, though she was relatively near. It can get into the 90s or so at the sanctuary, with very low humidity on the worst of days.
