Today is Earth Day, which is a celebration of our remarkable planet and a reminder that we have a responsibility to care for this home we share. It encourages us to focus on conservation and sustainability, as we look toward the future. We’ve talked about how elephants are keystone species, which means that they are critical to the survival of other plants and animals in their ecosystem. We’ve also written that they have a positive impact on climate change due to their place in the carbon storage cycle.
Here at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil, we’ve witnessed exactly what elephants can do to improve the environment. When the land that became the sanctuary was purchased, it had been home to cattle, which negatively impacted both the native flora and fauna. The longer that the elephants call ESB home, the more their presence encourages this wild, vast landscape to recover from the devastation it experienced for years. We now see native animals, who once were driven from their homes, return again and reclaim the land that was once theirs. Sanctuary means home for all species who live in the area. The more animals we see roaming the habitat, the more hope we have that the elephants are making a true difference in the world around them.

April 22, 2024 at 2:08 pmWhat about some MALE elephants?????
Is the current financial situation at ESB such that NO MALE elephants can be brought to live there???
Sara says
April 22, 2024 at 2:16 pmAs we have explained, it is not a matter of money. There are currently no males at ESB because no males are ready to be transported here. Once the Mendoza Ecoparque completes their training of Tamy then we can begin the permit process. Until, things are out of our hands.

April 23, 2024 at 11:30 amvery good news, I was frequently wondering about how the land was recovering post being a home for farmed cattle and am delighted to hear more or less what I thought would have been the case, ie it’s recovery for native flora and fauna (rewilding) alongside our sanctuary elephants. I also wonder what you do with the elephant poo?!
