As the relocation process moves forward for both Kenya and Pupy, we continue to work with the teams at both ecoparques to get them closer to sanctuary. Although we’ve been talking a lot about Kenya, today we’re going to give a little update on Pupy. She is progressing well along her journey to sanctuary, but the plan is to not officially start her required quarantine until her crate has been placed in her habitat. Then she can begin to go through the government-mandated sanitary procedures.
There are numerous tests and treatments that must be done during quarantine, but Pupy’s team has been working with her on these for some time, and she is comfortable with the people who care for her and the processes. Quarantine will last approximately 45 days, due to timing of tests and needed results before Pupy can be allowed into Brazil. This procedure is the same for any elephant that will be coming into Brazil from another country, and the same ones that Mara, Pocha, and Guille went through. Pupy already had a sneak peek at the relocation crate when it was there for Mara’s transport. So, although the team will work to make her comfortable with it, it won’t be totally new.
The transport container is already in Argentina, but will have to wait until after Christmas to have the needed equipment to put it in its place. We met with the team from the ecoparque, including the veterinarians and caregivers, to make sure we are all on the same page regarding the things that must be done in the coming weeks. We know the staff cares for Pupy greatly, and we want to make sure everyone is comfortable with the process. They’ve updated us on her care and how she is doing emotionally. It is always beneficial to hear from those who know her well. They also shared with us that they feel Pupy is doing well after Kuky’s passing, and they are seeing a different but positive side of her in recent days. This is to everyone’s relief since Kuky and Pupy arrived at the zoo together at the age of three. The team continues to offer her comfort and extra attention to help her get through things.
After all of the waiting, it is nice for everyone to start moving towards Pupy being at sanctuary. We will continue working closely with the ecoparque to make sure that things keep progressing in a positive and timely manner. Though there is still much to be done, we are looking forward to checking more things off the list in the coming weeks.

December 25, 2024 at 3:19 amIt’s good to hear that her Caregivers are seeing some positivity from Pupy. This can’t be easy for her. So much going on all at once so soon after the loss of Kuky. While we know the end result will be so worth it for her, so much change is still hard.
