We caught a brief moment of Lady enjoying herself at a mud hole recently. You can see that she splashes around with her trunk, covering herself with mud and generally making a nice squishy mess. She uses her trunk to scoop up little balls of mud – one of her favorite techniques. Toward the end, you can see that she is really silly and gets into the fun of it all.
Playing in the mud is not only a fun activity for the elephants, but it also offers the opportunity for natural stimulation, something that most captive elephants never get to experience. Plus, it is good for their skin.
P.S.: You may notice that she is lifting her leg a bit at the beginning. It just looks to us like she’s scratching an itch.

August 17, 2021 at 2:25 pmBecause crossing borders is MUCH MORE difficult during the pandemic, are there any other elephants in Brazil that you want to bring to GSE? Have you done a complete count of ALL captive elephants in South America? Have any other zoos on the continent offered GSE their elephants?

August 17, 2021 at 3:37 pmAs we’ve stated before, we keep these details quiet most of the time, as to not risk progress with any facilities we may be working with. But we are definitely not only focused on one country.

August 17, 2021 at 2:37 pmYes…I was concerned that her foot was bothering her.
Sara says
August 17, 2021 at 3:29 pmBecause her feet will never be healed, she is medicated for her discomfort every day. But we’re guessing this certainly helps make them feel better!

August 21, 2021 at 12:46 pmSo happy you clarified her back leg was possibly from something other than being painful for her. It was the first thing I noticed. It was wonderful to see her being playful and a little silly, entertaining herself! The pictures are great, but the videos of the girls really brings them to life. I LOVE watching them, and once again appreciate GSE so much. Anyone reading this, please consider going to Amazon Smile when you shop Amazon, and name Global Sanctuary for Elephants as your named charity donation.
