VOLUME UP for rumbles! Sometimes, the trio of Maia, Bambi, and Guille split up into two groups–Guille on her own and Maia and Bambi together. All three of them are wanderers, but they don’t always want to explore together. Guille seems to know that when her energy starts to ramp up, she needs to have some time to herself. This lesson took a long time to learn, but as she’s gotten older and a little wiser, she’s become incredibly respectful of the older elephants. Of course Bambi and especially Maia do a good job of making time for silly moments with Guille when their energy levels are high. Those two also head into areas of the habitat that Guille isn’t comfortable going, like across the creek in Yard 5. It’s a positive that everyone seems to know themselves well enough to get the most out of the space that sanctuary provides. 

There are plenty of times when the three girls decide to be side-by-side. It’s especially common in the mornings, when they stand with shoulders touching, waiting for breakfast, and perhaps to offer some vocal greetings after an evening of quiet. They sometimes spread out when they graze with each other, but they’re never too far apart. Here, you can see them all close together under a tree, where they were snacking. Bambi seemed to be having a great time dusting herself, and Maia was giving off some slow, deep rumbles. For her part, Guillermina seemed pretty sleepy, though not too sleepy to take a few slow bites of hay. It was one of many relaxing afternoons these ladies spend together, with each elephant seeming to get just what she needed.
