As the construction team continues to work on the male Asian elephant habitat, we noticed Bambi, Mara, Rana, and Maia all lined up along the nearby fenceline to take a look. We’re not exactly sure what was so interesting to them that day, but we did note that it was the only time in days that Maia returned across the creek from her spot in Yard 5. The fence crew wasn’t there that day, so it was a quiet day. Perhaps there was something interesting about the activities that only they saw.
Bambi, Mara, and Rana had been spending the day in Yard 4, when they joined Maia to make a foursome and observe the new construction from the Yard 5 fence. The atmosphere between the four elephants was very easy and they were relaxed with each other.
The four ladies stayed in the general area for a couple of hours and then wandered off in different directions – Maia back to Yard 5 and the others to Yard 4. But a definite trend is developing where Bambi, Mara, Rana, and Maia are becoming more comfortable together in relaxed and unforced situations.
This photo shows Mara, Bambi, and Maia all standing near one another.

January 10, 2022 at 4:34 pmI’m imagining the communication between the girls. …… “Look, it’s a different type of construction. Must be for boys.” “Boys? Oh God no, that’s just what we don’t need around here – boys!” “Oh chill out, we’re still going to be the Queens of the castle.”

January 10, 2022 at 8:54 pmReally cool photo! I wonder if they’re curious on who will live in that space? They’ll definitely know when more arrive in their beautiful home. So exciting to see more elephants there!

January 11, 2022 at 9:15 amI think, they all know that the space is expending. And I am pretty sure they think there will be new yards for them to explore soon! I do not believe they think that this new space/yard is for the new neighbours as that never happened before! So, when the noise stopped for the day, they were definitely there to check what is happening! They are so so smart! I am not sure if they will be disappointed that those new yards, now fenced off have new residents and they were not for them after all….Their reactions to that outcome will be amazing to watch…:-)
