Many people love the super silly and playful Maia, which we do as well, but because of how she was when she was with the circus, this face, body language and overall being is an enormous testament to the healing abilities of sanctuary.

Meet Rana: Our Next Resident!

We would like to introduce you to Rana (pronounced Ha-na). She is a lovely grandma that lives alone on the coast of Brazil and will be our next resident at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. Yay!! Congratulations!!

Rana was a circus elephant for over four decades and then in a story somewhat familiar to Brazil, was confiscated with nowhere to go. A hotel offered to take her in and that is where she currently resides. The hotel zoo adores her, but they also know that love is not enough to give Rana the life or happiness that she needs and deserves.

There are few things in life that can bring as much joy as this. Maia and Guida are both somewhat independent, they go their own way at times. Usually they are never that far apart, but other times they are close as can be, joined at the hip with their happy flaps and trunk touches.

One of the nicest things about the habitat at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil is that there are many trees and shaded areas dispersed throughout the pastures. This means the girls can graze during the hottest part of the day with shade and a temperature drop just steps away.

Morning with the Ladies

Morning with the ladies generally goes one of two ways. They are either tired from staying up all night or as a result of a food coma, or they are light and silly with a bit of vocalizations. And although food coma Maia is quite enjoyable, (it’s not often you see an elephant decide to nap mid step) chatty and playful seems to make Guida very happy.

Leaving the PAWS conference and on my first flight to Sao Paulo I remain overwhelmed by the spectrum of emotions which continue to carry through every thought and breath. This, being my third conference, was by far the most inspiring, the most thought provoking and the most humbling of them all. To be in a room of colleagues, of ground breaking scientist and of youth-filled advocates breaking down the walls for positive change, all coming together with a sense of unity and unilateral respect was simply and purely an honor.
