This week’s Sunday Smile shows Bambi, Maia, and Guille in the morning sun, seemingly ready for a snooze. After breakfast, it’s not unusual for the elephants to get a little sleepy. Maia and Guillermina are excellent nappers, but here you can see Bambi is ready to doze off, too. She makes some contented rumbles, which only serves to relax everyone more.
At one point, you can see the spots on Bambi’s ear as it’s backlit by the sun. Elephant ears are quite thin and the sunlight will often penetrate them, so they can be translucent in certain areas. It is easy to use ears as a way to identify the elephants. For instance, Bambi’s ears fold backward midway across the top. You can tell which girl is Maia because she has a puffy spot about the size of a human hand on her right ear–which you can see here. We invite you to look for more differences in their ears, using them to identify exactly which elephant is which.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.
