Sunday Smile: Rana’s Rump

The backside of Asian elephant Rana as she stands facing a fence. Her tail is swaying to the left

Every elephant’s tail is just a little different from their neighbor’s. The girls here at sanctuary display a range of lengths, widths, and hairiness, and it’s one of the features you can use to identify the Asian elephants from one another; Guille is well known for having the hairiest tail and Maia has the shortest. This Sunday Smile highlights Rana’s built-in fly swatter, which falls right about in the middle of the herd–longer than Maia’s and (somewhat surprisingly) growing more hair all the time!

Happy to learn my precious Rana’s tail is growing more hair as I guess to remember all the girls, except Guille & Pocha, arrived without that nice “pony tail”
