We all love Maia’s fuzzy head, which is a great way to identify her. But her ears are also gorgeous and are the focus of this week’s Sunday Smile. Maia’s ears are spotted near the bottom, but you can’t always see the change in pigmentation when she’s a muddy girl (which is often). She also has a charming habit of occasionally flapping one ear at a time instead of both ears at once. While delivering snacks to the girls, Scott snapped this picture, which shows Maia’s magnificent ears in all their glory. Standing against the background of the stunning green grass and the cloudy morning sky, her striking silhouette highlights the beauty of sanctuary life.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

March 24, 2024 at 5:25 pmMia’s ears are beautiful, but am I the only person who can see a dinosaur or maybe a dragon in the background infringing on her space. 🤣

March 26, 2024 at 8:39 amI have a beautiful picture of Maia, done by Thyra Rutter, framed on my wall. It shows her with her gorgeous depigmentation, Depigmentation is supposed to be strongest in elephants from Sri Lanka, but I have seen elephants with great amounts of orange or pink on their trunks and ears that were born in Thailand and other countries. South Indian elephants are often very depigmentated as well.

March 26, 2024 at 9:01 amHer body and face shape aren’t typical for Sri Lanka (we were just watching film of wild elephants there) but we’ll never truly know where she was stolen from for the sake of human entertainment. 😔
