Sunday Smile: Bambi’s Birthday Surprise

As you may have read, Friday was Bambi’s re-birthday, the anniversary of the day she first arrived at sanctuary. She’s officially been at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil for 5 whole years. Initially concerned by her poor body condition and possible health issues before her arrival, her transformation has been remarkable and she really seems to have grown into herself. On her special day, the care staff prepared a special watermelon, decorated with fruit toppings and a few Froot Loops for good measure. Sometimes elephants are very meticulous and pick up the smaller pieces of fruit a few at a time. Bambi’s technique is much less delicate as she shoves the whole treat in her mouth all at once. As Bambi finishes, Guille walks over, checking to make sure there were no leftovers.

P.S.: We’ve talked about Bambi’s vision before, and if you aren’t aware, she has cataracts in both eyes. As a result, her caregiver makes sure she knows where to find her watermelon. They do the same with her meals, so she doesn’t have to search. Cataract surgery has only been attempted on elephants a handful of times and Bambi is not a good candidate. But she has learned the lay of the land over the years and, with her friends, she does a pretty good job at navigating around the sanctuary.

    I do love Bambi, I also think she’s a brave girl considering her timidity when she was at the zoo. The life you’ve given her has done wonders for her, and I’m so happy that Maia has taken on her carer role too. Very happy 5th re-birthday Bambi dear girl.
