The annex at the back of Yard 4 that we finished in back in October of last year is used quite often these days. It has two chutes, so it is a good way for us to check out the elephants and make sure they are doing well.
In this video, Rana was heading into the annex yard for her morning breakfast. She enters and walks toward the people with her usual grin and the unspoken question of, “Where is my food?” Mara comes to stand next to her and is also bright and lovely. As you can see here, Rana was very serious about her meal and lets us know in the silliest way possible that she’s ready to eat.

January 25, 2022 at 2:25 pmso sweet an happy these beautiful ellies are….I have question maybe can be answered here…..i see there are no mahouts with your elephants as they roam free which i think is great….yet other sanctuaries in Thailand i watch all the elephants are followed or watched by these mahouts….any idea if there is reason they also cant just roam free as your guys do???? thanks for any info……also Thank You for what you do…..

January 25, 2022 at 5:11 pmThere are some cultural differences in Asia that means they handle elephants slightly differently. Additionally, with the exception of some male elephants, their habitats are not enclosed, so they have mahouts to keep and eye on them and make sure the elephants don’t wander too far away. Many of these sanctuaries also have enclosures where the elephants will sleep at night.
