After Rana’s second trip to the male Asian habitat, we opened the yard for her and she hurried back to her friends – and to a little trumpet party. Maia, Bambi, and Mara were enjoying the dirt and Guille was standing nearby after saying hello to the three of them. You can see the moment when Mara and Bambi notice Rana rapidly making her way toward them. Mara greeted her with her little “errr” noises and Bambi offered a few deep rumbles.
It was interesting to see Maia stay with the group during the reunion. After spending much time to herself over the past year or so, she has been recovering and shifting – clearly wanting to be around other elephants more often. We have a curiosity as to whether she will eventually join in their vocalizations or if she will simply continue to quietly engage. Maia was once a very vocal elephant, but she tucked that part of herself away when Guida passed. As she continues to evolve, we wonder if she will choose to participate vocally or if she’ll remain comfortable just sharing space and companionship with the others. Either way, Rana received a warm welcome on her grand return home from another adventure.

March 7, 2023 at 4:14 pmI want to thank Scott and Kat SO much for the new podcast. I find listening to them share their experiences, the insights gained over their years of caring for elephants, and the stories of the individual elephants they’ve known and loved, both heart- and soul-stirring. Bless you for your work, and for sharing more of the journey with us in this way.
