Rana doesn’t often spend time by herself near the barn, but recently she went off on her own and found herself close to the barn and to Maia. It was time for Lady’s foot treatments, so we shifted Rana and Maia to an adjoining yard to give Lady some space.
Maia and Rana spent almost the entire day together, which was encouraging to see. The two would be on opposite sides of the yard, doing their own thing sometimes. Other times, they would stand very near to each other. At one point, Maia was leaning her heavy head on Rana’s backside.
Both ladies made their way to the mud wallow – Rana first, followed by Maia. Rana took a step away, looking at first like she might walk off. But then she backed up, tail out, and swung it a bit in Maia’s face. The whole interaction was light and playful. They didn’t get too silly, since both seemed to be in a bit of a reflective headspace that afternoon. Still, it was a nice change of pace for them both. Maia had some direct elephant time, which she often initiated throughout the day, and Rana changed up her routine a little. When we left for the evening, the two ladies were still together, but may have split up during the night, as Rana was back with Mara and Bambi the next morning.
In this video, you can see Rana and Mara at the mud wallow, with Rana teasing Maia with her tail.

October 17, 2021 at 1:52 pmAww, I am picturing Maia resting her head on Rana’s rear, and it is the sweetest thing to imagine. I am so glad that Maia had the chance for some elephant friend time with head resting and all. Rana really is the sweetest soul, I hope she enjoyed herself as well.
