Pupy Has Access to the Yards!

Pupy now has access to the yards outside of the barn. We opened up the gates for her at 9 AM this morning. There are three different ways that she can leave when she chooses to do so. There are exits through the two treatment chutes and one at the end of a stall. At the moment, she’s decided to stay put. She will walk to the edge of the barn and stop without stepping onto the grass.

That’s part of the beauty of sanctuary. Just like when she took the time she needed last night to come out of her crate, she has the right to make the decision as to when she’ll step into the yard. We’re proud of how brave she’s being, taking herself out of her comfort zone and making progress hour by hour.
She had her first sanctuary treatment this morning. Pupy has an old pressure sore on her face, which can happen when elephants lie down on hard surfaces for long periods of time. Now that she has natural surfaces to rest on, we hope this can clear up. We also shifted her around a bit in the barn so that it could be cleaned. Now her space is sparkling clean. She seems relaxed and has a soft demeanor. Her caregivers are there for her but are also giving her room to explore the new space.

I spent more than six hours waiting with bated breath yesterday…awaiting Pupy’s first steps on sanctuary ground. And, wouldn’t you know it? My husband held the phone while I was molding my meatballs and screamed SHE DID ITTTTTT!!! I screamed with frustration but sheer joy that she was finally “home”!!!!

So great. And how wonderful that from now on she’s able to walk on dirt and grass, as nature intended.

What a beautiful moment! All these poor elephants have experienced pain since they were infants, separated from their moms, going through the cruel Phajaan for them to obey awful humans!
So it doesn’t surprise me the time it took for her to gain the confidence she needed. So very happy for her! Many thanks to make this happen so Pupy (as the others) can live free, with dignity being loved and cared for. for the rest of their lives. 💖🐘

It will be exciting to see dear Pupy begin to explore and get to know the sanctuary and gradually find her favourite spots, to just wander and spend time, under a tree, or in a bush! Wherever she chooses. It’s so so wonderful that she is finally out from that confinement.
She is utterly beautiful, what an emotional and expressive little face she has. I absolutely adore her.
Scott, your gentle voice is always a comfort and the wisdom you speak from your experience and understanding of the elephants is grounding and calming, just knowing they are getting the best possible care for their healing journey.
Thank God for you and Kat, and all the caregivers who understand eles.
    Love you all 💜💜🐘🌱

It was wonderful watching the live feed of Pupy arriving and the crate doors opening and waiting and watching her wondering how long it would take her to feel confident enough to step out! 🥰

Another successful job, for another deserving sanctuary resident. She really is so cute. Pupy reminds of when we were at TES and at the African area, and suddenly Zula? came rushing out of the trees to say hi and you had all us all scramble back from the fence, but we saw her really close to us. There is something special about the energy of the African elephants. Looking forward to Pupy having many more friends join her as well.

I was able to watch ALL of it since I took my live feed everywhere I went yesterday! I watched the magical moment when she finally decided she was ready. 👏🎉

I so applaud all the people involved with this very BIG ” birthquake” for Pupy. I heard Scott’s emotion, and felt his happy tears.

I felt Kats joy when everyone arrived with this beautiful, precious, sweet soul. She gives off an aura of serenity. It’s all so beautiful! 😍 #BirthdayPupy #Serenity #AuraOfSerenity
