Yesterday morning, Bambi, Maia, and Guillermina were all in Yard 1, hanging out and grazing. The caregivers heard Bambi call out to the other two, but no one answered. This caused Bambi to get a little agitated. She put her tail up in the air and quickly walked over to where the other two were–well within sight distance–making short little trumpet blasts.
In this video, you can see that when Bambi was near to the others, they flanked her, one on each side, seemingly letting her know that they’re with her if she needs anything and she’s safe.
P.S.: You can see Guille tearing off big mouthfuls of grass, shaking off the roots and shoving the whole bite into her mouth at once. She also carefully picks some branches from above her head for an extra-fresh bite of browse.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

March 27, 2025 at 6:42 pmI’m thinking, yep, human brain stuff, that in some highly evolved elephant way, Bambi has told them of her sight issue and they respond as great, loving, caring souls do?
