Miss Maia is back to her wandering ways. Recently, the caregivers didn’t immediately see her when they came down for breakfast. That’s not necessarily an issue of concern, since the elephants have such wide expanses to wander; it’s wonderful to think they’re taking advantage of the space they have to explore and graze.
After feeding the others, they went to look for Maia so that she could have her meal and they found her in the middle of a thick wooded area in the back of Yard 5. It’s not the furthest point distance-wise of Yard 5, but you have to know where you’re going to find it. It’s somewhere that she and Guida used to spend time, so we know she’s fond of that space. It’s a gorgeous area that has interesting and varied vegetation. Of course, we didn’t try to encourage Maia to leave her spot – instead leaving her food in an area where she could reach it. As always, our schedule revolves around the elephants, not the other way around.
Since then, she’s been back and forth between yards. Because the rainy season has been so unpredictable this year, we’ve received more showers recently than we would expect. That’s keeping everything nice and green and likely is encouraging Maia to enjoy parts of the habitat that she doesn’t always trek to.

April 4, 2024 at 5:17 pmA beautiful photo of Maia with the lush greenery and blue sky. It touches my heart to know it must bring peace to Maia to be able to visit the exact area that she and Guida once explored, foraged and shared their friendship. Love you Maia. ❤️🐘💕
