On this particular day, Mara, Maia, Bambi, Rana, and Guillermina were sharing the two larger yards while Lady stayed close to the barn. It was after dinner and the caregivers had set out a number of large palm leaves that had been trimmed because of a construction project, for the elephants to find in the habitat. Maia is a big fan of palms, so she found a stash pretty quickly and got busy eating. Some of the girls don’t love the stalk, particularly when it gets thick. But Maia doesn’t discriminate and tends to welcome most any food that comes her way.
P.S.: For those who love the sound of elephants chewing, this video has a couple of truly satisfying crunches, as Maia snaps the palm leaves into pieces and takes a nice sized bite.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.
