While the rainy season has ended and we are in the early dry season, we got an unseasonably cool storm today that not only provided appreciated moisture but also dropped the temperature. Although our wet caregivers aren’t quite rejoicing, this has been no big deal to Baby, who is used to living in much colder climates for part of the year than what we experience in Mato Grosso. She showed no outward signs of having a chill at all.
When the care staff went up to the kitchen for lunch, they checked on all of the girls via the observation camera while she lounged in the barn. There’s not much that can be said about Baby that she isn’t plainly demonstrating herself. She’s relaxed, silly, and seems to have found joy in a simple dirt pile. First, she lies down for a moment, but begins to rock back and forth, eventually just getting so cheeky as to smush her face in the dirt. All of this behavior indicates that she’s relaxing more and finding comfort in some of the new things around her. Although the barn is open so she can go into the habitat whenever she wants, it still acts as a safe space for her, and it’s okay for her to have touchstones she can return to if she feels uncertain–but that is already shifting with every day.

June 24, 2026 at 10:13 pmI am so happy that Baby is now at the sanctuary. Even though the park treated her much better than the poor elephants in Mendoza were treated, she will be far happier and more mentally balanced at the sanctuary. Having space, with no mechanical noise, loud music, or shouting… Just nature and the birds singing!
But I am still traumatized to have watched on the internet, a video showing her circus act when she was very young… It breaks my heart… I can’t even imagine all the violence and physical and mental abuse she has endured. How can you ask an elephant to lift itself completely right on its front legs? And the way they make her run on stage, “frolicking,” and people laughing! My God, it’s so heartbreaking! No wonder she suffers from insecurity, poor little girl…
I really can’t wait for Scott to find her a charming nickname as he knows so well how to do it! This name “Baby” just makes me think of the horrible images in this video and leaves a bitter taste…
And I have a thought for all your other elephants who also experienced the same barbarism. Fortunately they are now out of misery. But there are still so many others who need you… I hope that other judges will give the opportunity to other elephants to come and live a better life at your place.
Long live the sanctuary!
